Today, Sony revealed the PlayStation Indie Initiative. In a post written by Shuhei Yoshida on the PlayStation Blog, the company announced a revamped interest in the indie game community.

The statement read, “With PlayStation Indies, we hope to spotlight and support the best of the best indie games being published on PlayStation and the entire indie community as a whole. Our goal is to make PlayStation the best place to develop, find, and play great indie games.”

The initiative seems to signal a reinvestment in the indie game community from Sony. With their commercially under-performing but beloved PlayStation Vita console, Sony became the go-to company for smaller, niche titles. The platform was ideal for games like Guacamelee, and Shovel Knight. But, as the Vita wound down and the Switch took off, many players began to see the Nintendo console as the perfect platform for independent games. Its portability lends itself nicely to short bursts of gameplay.

But it seems PlayStation may be looking to reclaim the title.

The initiative is an attempt to put a spotlight on indie games in the PlayStation ecosystem. Following the reveal this morning, the company will be unveiling nine new games for the PS4 and PS5.
